The twelfth annual Carefree Christmas Bird Count was held on Friday, January 2, 2004. This count was special in that we set records both for the number of volunteers (101) and the number of individual birds (14,389). Most of our people were in the field but we did have 16 observers who kept an eye on their feeders.
We found 102 species this year that equals our five-year average. An Olive Warbler at Lower Camp Creek and a Pyrrhuloxia along Tranquil Trail in Carefree were new species for the count, bringing our cumulative total to 151 species. In addition we listed the rare “Sooty” form of the Fox Sparrow for the first time. Species noted for just the second time were Gadwall, Merlin, Black-throated Gray Warbler and White-throated Sparrow.
The drought situation improved in 2003. Rainfall at the three county monitoring stations in the count area averaged 11.96 inches, nearly four times the previous year’s total. This fact, together with our many participants, helped us to establish new high totals for 20 species.
We returned to the Satisfied Frog Restaurant in Cave Creek for our compilation dinner. Once again we had an opportunity to hear “Honky Tonk” Jack Fairclough at the piano as we ate and tallied. Sadly this was to be the last time he would entertain us as Jack passed away three months later.
