What We Do

Birding! The chapter's very active membership sponsors numerous field trips throughout the year, mostly to sites near the Phoenix metropolitan area, but also to other parts of Arizona and (occasionally) out of state. Although southeast Arizona is the most well-known region of the state for birds, many of the same species are found in the Phoenix area. In recent years, the area has had sightings of Eared Trogon, Tufted Duck, Neotropic Cormorant, Blue-Footed Booby, and other unusual species.

A hotline is updated weekly with notable bird sightings and directions.

Regular monthly meetings (September thru May) are held at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. All meetings, except May, are held at Dorrence Hall at the Desert Botanical Garden . (see map below). The Annual Banquet in May will be at Shalimar Country Club in Tempe . The Desert Botanical Garden is located at 1201 North Galvin Parkway , Phoenix , Arizona . This is approximately ¼ mile north of the Phoenix Zoo. Dorrance Hall is located just off the main parking lot and entry to the garden and there will be signs directing you to the meeting place. Dorrance Hall is at the bottom left of this map http://desertbotanical.org/images/newmap.jpg.

The chapter also is active in habitat conservation for birds and other wildlife, with emphasis on riparian habitat, old-growth forest, and habitat used by endangered species.

The chapter's education committee sets up programs for local schools, and sponsors scholarships.
